Its been a little while but certainly not on purpose.  We are more than half way into January already and each week seems to get busier.  We will not forget our mission here though and we have plans very soon for another review.  In the mean time, I wanted to leave you with a very easy recipe that is great for a weekend breakfast or lunch.

                                                           Green Chile and Cheddar Pie

                                                               Preheat oven to 400 degrees
1 ready made pie crust (or make your own)

Unroll the ready made pie crust and place in a 9" inch deep dish (just make sure not too shallow), take a fork and prick the bottom and sides several times (prevents the crust from shrinking).  Once oven is preheated to 400 degrees place the crust in oven.  Bake for about 15 minutes or until crust is golden brown.  Remove from oven (set aside) and turn the temperature down to 375 degrees.

4 eggs cracked into a medium size bowl
2 cups of milk (we use 2%)
2 tablespoons (heaping) of mayo made with olive oil in it
1 small and drained can of green chiles
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (reserve 1/3 cup set aside)

Beat the 4 eggs in a bowl until mixed well and a deep yellow color. Add the milk and 2 tablespoons of mayo and continue to beat until well blended.  Add the can of drained green chiles and the cheddar cheese (all but the 1/3 in reserve), stir until well distributed throughout the egg mixture.  Add salt and pepper (go light as you can always add more later).  Pour mixture into the cooked pie shell and add the remaining cheddar cheese on top.  Place back into oven for about 25 minutes depending on your oven (test with a knife and when it comes out clean its done).

Note:  Watch your pie edges once you put it back into the oven.  If they are getting too browned and the egg center is not done cooking then use tin foil to cover the edges around the pie to prevent getting too dark.

We finally made it, our first restaurant review!  Let me set the stage, a little place called "Shalimar Tandoor Grill", Indian food!  Our family set out at about 11:30 am this morning on our little journey.  The day was gray and a little drizzle was falling, not the most perfect setting for a drive but we were determined to make the best of it.  Our drive was about an hour away and allowed for other stops after lunch if we felt compelled.

As our drive was uneventful it allowed for some good family talk time and we took advantage of our captured audience status (read: locked in a moving car with each other for an hour) and discussed our plans for a family vacation this year.  The hour flew by and before we knew it we were right in front of the restaurant, very easy to locate. Now for our humble observations...first up is Kid POV...

Hi,the place was O.K..Not really a kid place. The food was OK.....but most of it was not kid like. They however do have a kids menu. The buffet did not have much kid food. They  did give you bread that tastes great.:(     Kid POV...

I have traveled a bit and have tried Indian food in many cities.  Shalamar Tandoor ranks up their with the best!  First, were  greeted by a welcoming staff.  The decor inside was nice.  They have two dining rooms and a bar.  All clean and making us feel like we traveled to India for a couple hours.  Our very cordial waitress recommended the buffet as the best deal for the amount and variety of food offered.  It didn't let me down.  Wow!  It was like a festival of flavors and spices in my mouth!  Everything from the bread to the vegetarian/non-vegetarian dishes was great.  I felt like I got an even deal for all the food I consumed and how I was treated.  Also, on a side note, I always check out the restrooms and the kitchen if I can catch a glimpse.  I feel that if these places are kept clean, that they are representative on how the owners/managers feel about their food and their business.  They passed the Dad test. Great job Shalamar Tandoor, you won the Dad over!  Dad gives you two thumbs up!   Dad POV...

From a Mom point of view, we knew we were taking a chance with the ethnicity of the restaurant where our Kid was concerned.  As we encourage trying all kinds of food and exposure to cultures other than our own we also let Kid form opinions with open and gentle guidance.   So when we arrived and decided to take a look at the buffet offerings I knew immediately to ask for a kid menu with traditional kid friendly food.  So to start, the kid menu was traditional and did not disappoint and was quite satisfying for lunch.

Dad and Mom went immediately for the buffet at the recommendation of the server (who was by the way attentive and polite and was full of information when asked a question) and after we ordered our drinks we went up to begin our Indian cuisine adventure.  The choices were amazing, the smells mouth watering as we wandered our way along the hot buffet tables.  Wonderful vegetable dishes, curries, traditional tandoor grilled chicken, mild, medium and hot, too many choices for one trip up.  The flavors were delectable and the spice just right.  The curried chicken was amazing and tender, the sauce cooked to perfection.  This was probably my favorite although if you ask me tomorrow it could be one of the other incredible dishes.  Put all this flavor with the most incredible baked to order Naan flat bread and it no wonder you walk out of there in a food coma!!!  This Mom gives Shalimar Tandoor Grill 2 thumbs up!!!

The buffet was priced at $12 per person and worth every penny!  You can also order off the menu and you can find the location and the menu online at www.shalimarfaync.com

Happy New Year from FFR to all our blogger friends!

Sunday, December 30, 2012

Hi and welcome to our blog.  We are a family of three...Mom, Dad and kid.  We live a simple life and enjoy each others company.  We believe in a quality family life and love to travel together even if it's only for a day.  On any given Sunday (or Saturday) our day trips typically include having our kid point to a spot on our state map and off we go.  These day trips are void of any technology except for a paper map and a cheap pair of reading glasses!

We set off with a full tank of gas in the car and empty tanks in our bellies.  Our mission is to find a local eatery in the area we are heading and then give our humble points of view (POV) on the establishment and the food.  We thought it would be fun to share our points of view with other families and will do so from the Mom POV, the Dad POV and the Kid POV.  Our hope is that other families will find this information helpful and fun, in an effort to maybe bring back some good old fashion family time.

Please check back for our (hopefully) weekly posts and ride along with us to discover a whole world of food and fun. We welcome comments and suggestions and hope to hear from you soon.  Thank you for your interest!
